A hilltop village in the heart of Luberon

Gordes owes its unique character to its typically Provençal architecture, where the stone houses blend harmoniously into the landscape. Our personal tips

To get the most out of your visit to Gordes, it is best to arrive off-season or early in the morning, especially in summer when there are many holidaymakers. For children, a visit to ‘Les Bories’ is really recommended, where the little ones can run around freely and discover the little houses inside.

If you want to enjoy the beauty of the flowering lavender around the village, one of the best times to visit Gordes is undoubtedly the summer. From mid-June to early August, the landscape turns into a veritable ocean of blue and purple, creating a magical atmosphere. The lavender season is also an opportunity to admire the Luberon’s landscapes in all their splendour, with mountains, valleys and hilltop villages. It is an ideal time for hiking, taking photos or just enjoying the mild Provençal climate.

If you visit Gordes, you can also take the opportunity to visit the nearby abbey of Sénanque (beautiful lavender fields !), or L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and its antique shops. The route to Sénaque through the rocky hills alone is worthwhile. A combination with a visit to Roussillon and its famous ochre valley is also recommended !

Spring and autumn are ideal seasons to enjoy the charm of the village in a quieter atmosphere, with pleasant temperatures and beautiful light on the golden stones of the houses.

If you come by car, bear in mind that parking in the village can be tricky in high season. There are several car parks on the outskirts of Gordes, some of which are free outside the summer period. Once parked, you have to reckon with some walking, but that’s part of the fun of exploring.

If you fancy something sweet, don’t hesitate to pause on the terrace to enjoy a pastry, a coffee or a glass of chilled rosé. For lovers of panoramic views, one of Gordes’ best vantage points is on the road from Cavaillon: a natural belvedere perfect for taking the ideal photo of the village.
