History : From the island in the Sorgue to the town of today

L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue owes its name to its exceptional location, surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the river Sorgue. In the past, this island was a fishing village whose main activity was trout fishing. In the Middle Ages, it developed into a trade and craft centre, mainly thanks to the water mills that were used to grind grain and make paper.

Today, these historic water mills bear witness to a thriving past and add to the charm of this picturesque town near Avignon.

Isle-sur-la-Sorgue: the antiques capital of Provence

With more than 300 antique and second-hand dealers, l’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is known as one of the largest antique and second-hand markets in Provence. Along the city’s canals, you will find art galleries and antique shops with unique finds ranging from antique furniture to collectibles.

Don’t miss the international antiques fairs, which attract lovers from all over the world every year. These big events turn the city into a real open-air museum.

The Provencal market: an explosion of colour and flavour

Every Sunday, Isle-sur-la-Sorgue’s Provencal market brings the town centre to life with its colourful stalls. Held along the canals, the market is known as one of the most beautiful in the Vaucluse. You will find an incredible variety of local products: seasonal fruits and vegetables, artisan cheeses, Provençal herbs, as well as other handmade products and souvenirs.

This market is the perfect opportunity to taste regional specialities while enjoying the friendly, authentic atmosphere of a Provence market.

The market is open all year round, every Thursday and Sunday from 7am to 1pm, except on 1 January and 25 December.
