Mont Ventoux, a legendary mountain peak

The Mont Ventoux, nicknamed the ‘Giant of Provence’, is the highest mountain in the Vaucluse with a height of 1910 metres. This mountain range offers contrasting landscapes, from lush forests of cedar, beech, pine and spruce, to steep slopes, all the way to the almost lunar summit. The climate can be particularly harsh, with the powerful wind from which it takes its name, the mistral wind (“vent” is wind in French).
Classified by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve and Natura 2000 site, Mont Ventoux is home to exceptional biodiversity. The rich and varied fauna includes chamois, mouflon, golden eagles, vultures and even wolves. The flora is equally remarkable, with numerous height plants and rare species such as the Martagon lily and Bertolini’s aquilegia. The vines and lavender growing at the foot of the mountain or on the slopes also contribute to the rich scents and colours on the mountain.

This emblematic mountain has a unique geomorphology, with a predominantly limestone base and numerous crushed stone slopes at the summit, which explains its characteristic whiteness. Mont Ventoux is also subject to intense karst formation due to water erosion, creating spectacular uplifts such as the Gouffre de Fontaine de Vaucluse.
A true symbol of Provence, Mont Ventoux on a clear day offers an exceptional panorama stretching from the Alps to the Mediterranean, via the Massif Central and the Rhône Valley. This breathtaking view, combined with its rich history and unique ecosystem, makes it a popular destination for hikers, cyclists and nature lovers.
