The Caves of Thouzon: a hidden treasure in the Vaucluse

During your next holiday in Provence, discover one of the region’s most fascinating natural attractions. Located nearby in Thouzon in the commune of Le Thor in the Vaucluse, the Thouzon Caves are an ideal destination for nature lovers, geology enthusiasts or for a family adventure outing, just a 15-minute drive from our Moulin de Souchieres ! We have visited these caves several times with our children and really recommend the cave for an outing close to home with the whole family. Who wants to come along on an adventure ?

An underground pearl in Provence

The caves of Thouzon are not the most famous in France, but that is precisely what makes them so charming. Near our Moulin, in the heart of the Vaucluse, just a few kilometers from Avignon, they offer a true dive into the depths of the earth. Entering the cave, you immediately feel the unique sensation of being transported to another universe, wonderfully fresh during the hot summer months !

This cave is often recommended as a family outing, as the visit is also suitable for younger children. Unlike other caves that may be bigger and more impressive, a visit to the natural caves of Provence is easy, without long waiting times and accessible to all, making it a perfect outing for family activities. We do recommend bringing a good pair of shoes, because although the paths are well laid out, you’ll be walking in a damp, cool environment.

A fascinating geological history

One of the most impressive aspects of the visit is the geological history of the caves. Admire the rock formations that are millions of years old. The geological discovery of the Thouzon caves dates back to the early 20th century, and since then they have attracted not only tourists but also many caving enthusiasts.

Cave lovers will be pleased to discover that this cave is a rare example of a ‘dry cave’. This means that erosion has stopped, leaving the formations intact and allowing us to admire them in all their splendor. As you wander through the galleries, you will see beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, some meters high, that seem to float in time.

An extraordinary place to visit in southern France

The guides on site are passionate and very knowledgeable, and will explain in detail the geological history of this exceptional place. They will show you the secrets of the Thouzon caves and explain how these spectacular formations were created over thousands of years. This type of visit is both educational and fascinating, perfect for children and curious adults.

If you are staying in Provence, the Thouzon caves are a must-visit in the south of France. Whether you are a nature lover or just looking for a fun and adventurous outing, this dive into the underground world is a thrilling experience.

Provence is rich in natural and cultural attractions, but few offer such an adventurous experience as a visit to the Thouzon caves. If you enjoy nature walks or want to diversify your activities, a visit to the caves will make you discover the subterranean aspect of this beautiful region.
