Orange, a sunny town in the heart of Provence

Orange, located in the Vaucluse department, is a Roman town in Provence with southern charm and a rich past. Located at the crossroads between Avignon and northern Drôme, it enjoys a mild, sunny climate almost all year round. Surrounded by vineyards, hills and lavender fields, Orange offers a typically Provençal setting, perfect for a cultural getaway or a longer stay. With its welcoming atmosphere and exceptional heritage, it is a destination not to be missed by lovers of history, old stones and Provençal art of living.

Orange-Nassau – the link with the Netherlands:

In the middle of the Middle Ages, Orange became a principality and passed successively through the hands of several noble families. In 1544, William of Nassau (aka William the Silent), then aged 11, inherited the town from his cousin René de Chalon, who had no children of his own, and was given the title of Prince of Orange. Since then, his family has been known as the House of Orange-Nassau, and orange has become the colour of the Netherlands. William’s son, Philip William, was enthroned Prince of Orange in Orange. After his death, the principality passed to his brother, Prince Maurice, who ordered the construction of modern fortifications. As a result, most of the Roman remains have disappeared from the city, as their stones were reused to build the citadel on the hill and the city walls. Only the theatre and the triumphal arch survived, as they were incorporated into the fortifications.

An extraordinary Roman past

Founded in 35 BC as Colonia Julia Secundanorum Arausio, Orange is one of the few French towns to have preserved so many visible traces of its Roman past. Colonised by veterans of the Roman army, it quickly became a prosperous city, with grand public monuments and town planning inspired by Rome. Orange’s two most emblematic Roman monuments are the ancient theatre and the triumphal arch, which are still standing today and bear witness to this flourishing era. This unique archaeological wealth makes Orange a veritable open-air museum for all lovers of ancient history, and along with Avignon, the heart of Vaucluse’s historic heritage.
